The writing that doesn’t belong in the Journal.

A members-only stream — longer, looser, more personal. The pieces a public newsletter wouldn't run, written for the readers who fund the directory.

Why it exists

The public Journal stays editorially tight — Weekly issues, the occasional review essay, founder POV pieces that earn their place. Member Letters is what doesn’t fit that frame. Notes from the desk. Brands we walked away from and why. The five emails the brand reps sent this month. A 3,000-word piece on whether the chore coat is over.

What lands here

  • //Editorial decisions — when we change the methodology, demote a brand a tier, kill a review halfway through. Public posts when a change matters; Member Letters when it’s inside-baseball.
  • //Walked-away pieces — brands that pitched, brands that sent product, brands we visited and chose not to cover. The reasoning gets written down even if the review never runs.
  • //Long takes — pieces over 2,000 words on category questions (“is the henley actually a thing or did the menswear internet invent it?”). The Journal gets the conclusion; Members get the working.
  • //Personal notes — what the editor actually wore last week, why a product got rotated out, the cost-per-wear math on a five-year-old jacket.

Cadence

Weekly-ish — not on a schedule. Two letters in a busy week, none in a slow one. The lower the cadence pressure, the more honest the writing.

When this ships

Member Letters launches with the premium tier. Until then, the public Journal carries everything. Subscribe to the newsletter for the announcement.

The premium tier — and this feature — launches once the directory has enough seed coverage to make it useful. Subscribe for the announcement.
